Zigong UNESCO Global Geopark is located in Zigong City of Sichuan Province, a city known as “one-thousand-year salt capital, hometown of dinosaur and lantern town of China”; the north boundary of Zigong UNESCO Global Geopark is Qinglong Mountain of Guanshan Town; the south boundary is Spinulose Tree Fern Valley of Dongjia Town; the west boundary is municipal boundary between Zigong City and Leshan City and the east boundary is Sanduozhai Town of Da’an District; the geopark covers an area of 1,630.46 square meters.
Officially approved by UNESCO as a member of the Global Geoparks Network in 2008, Zigong Global Geopark encompasses sedimentary strata recording the transition from marine to terrestrial environments from the Triassic to the Cretaceous periods. It features world-famous Middle Jurassic dinosaur fossil relics and time-honored well salt historical sites, complemented by Alsophila spinulosa communities known as "living fossils". Integrating the profound historical culture of Zigong, the geopark is a multifunctional destination integrating scientific research, science popularization, sightseeing, leisure and vacation. It boasts rich scientific connotations, distinctive local characteristics, profound cultural heritage and high aesthetic ornamental value.
The geopark houses renowned attractions including Zigong Dinosaur Museum, Zigong Salt Industry History Museum, China Lantern Museum, Shenhai Well, Rongxian Buddha, and Shisun Valley.
