Since the Sui and Tang dynasties, Huotong has nurtured a thousand years of civilization with splendid cultural and historical heritage. As the foremost of the Thirty-Six Taoist Grotto Heavens, it also boasts abundant geological sites.
1.Five-finger-like Mountain of Huotong
Composed of a cluster of conical peaks, Five-Finger Peak is strongly dissected vertically under the influence of the east-northeast trending structures, forming typical landforms such as steep cliffs, stone walls and stone pillars. The whole massif resembles five upright fingers. Wuliang Palace, a Taoist temple, nestles on its mountainside. On overcast and rainy days, the peak is shrouded in swirling mist, presenting a fairyland-like scenery.
2.Yingzhou Fairy Pond
Yingzhou Fairy Pond in Hongkou covers a water area of 8.92 square kilometers. Surrounded by rolling mountains, it presents a magnificent landscape of a calm lake amid high gorges, serving as an ethereal fairyland on water. Major surrounding geological relics include volcanic conical peaks, peak clusters, stone walls, stone pillars, stone boulders, caves and waterfalls. The Landscape Gallery features well-developed volcanic rock cliffs and stone walls. With green mountains reflecting in clear waters and the lake merging with the sky, the scenery is extraordinarily grand, just like a traditional Chinese landscape painting. The Stone Bamboo Forest consists of volcanic columnar joints. Subjected to long-term fluvial erosion and weathering, the volcanic rock pillars become round and smooth, resembling bamboos inlaid on the cliff. With distinct undulating textures, it exudes an ancient and elegant charm.
